This week marks the return of the County Senior League. We have had a few changes over the summer. This first of which is a new sponsor in the form of Pete’s Patisserie. The second major change is the adoption of an Under 21 Division and Cup.
The Under 21 Division will get underway next Saturday, with ten teams taken part in the league. The hope is that the teams in the new division will develop together with age and ascent through the league together into the adult section.
Sadly, on the opening weekend there is only one fixture in the Under 21 Division. The game comes on Saturday at Swinton Miners Welfare, where Swinton Athletic U21 host Treeton Terriers U21.
Elsewhere, across the other divisions there is a very busy fixture list over the opening month of fixtures.
The pick of the fixtures in the Premier Division comes on Wednesday between Houghton Main and last years’ League Cup winners Wombwell Main. Houghton Main were very strong in the league last season, but fell away in the final run-in eventually finishing in fifth position despite being in the top two for the majority of the season. They will be hoping to address their drop-off this time out. Wombwell Main will be hoping to translate their excellent cup form into their league campaign and build on last years’ mid-table position.
A coincidence puts two new promoted teams from Division One last season against each other in the opening week. Oughtibridge WMFC won Division One by point from Athersley Recreation Reserves last season. They will renew this rivalry on Wednesday night at Sheerien Park, with Athersley as the hosts.
Jubilee Sports make their debut in Division One on Saturday with an away game against the new Joker FC. Much is expected of Jubilee Sports, after their dominant display last season in Division Two. They also managed an impressive cup campaign. Joker FC have a busy first week with three games in the first eight days of competition.
There have been a few changes in Division Two. The most apparent is expansion to 14 teams, all of which are in action on Wednesday night. Caribbean Sports start their campaign at home to Sheffield Lane Top. Caribbean will be hoping to put behind them last years’ relegation and get off the mark as quickly as possible. Sheffield Lane Top had an inconsistent season last time out, finishing mid-table.
